Karlovy Vary pot

- the absolute classic in coffee preparation.

The Karlovy Vary pot is a so-called soap pot made of white porcelain. It consists of four parts in total: the coffee pot, the porcelain filter, the water distributor and the lid. Due to the exclusive use of tasteless porcelain, the aroma of the coffee can unfold here unadulterated.

The original Karlovy Vary pot comes from the Bayreuth porcelain factory Walküre and was used in the famous coffee houses of Vienna even before the First World War. The coffee served in the pot was simply called "Karlovy Vary". In addition to the Karlovy Vary pot, there is also a sister in modern design: the Bayreuth pot. The way it works is identical.

Our tip

Choose the coarsest grinding level. This results in a slow and even extraction of the coffee aromas and the coffee does not fall through the porcelain filter. By the way, the Karlovy Vary pot is ideal for preparation at the table.

The preparation

Before use, rinse the pot with hot water to preheat it, so that the coffee does not cool down so quickly. At the same time, this step serves as a cleaning of remaining minute particles from the previous brewing process. Put the coffee into the porcelain filter and boil the water. It should have a temperature between 92 and 96 °C when it is poured. When the water boils, pour a small amount into the filter so that the coffee grounds are initially only moistened and begin to swell. The swelling of the coffee, called "blooming", takes about 30 seconds and is important for the later development of the flavors.

Then place the water distributor on the filter and slowly and continuously add water in several cycles in a circular pattern. Make sure that the water has completely run into the pot before you refill. After about four to five minutes of extraction time, you can remove the water conditioner and filter. Then put the lid on the pot and your coffee is ready.
